Beachcomber Hospitality Investments (BHI), a subsidiary of New Mauritius Hotels Limited (NMH), has entered exclusive negotiations to acquire a leading five-star resort in Zanzibar. The non-binding letter of intent, announced on 31 July 2025, marks a pivotal moment in Beachcomber's regional growth strategy.
Real Estate Investment Architecture
Beachcomber's real estate operations span multiple entities. BHI owns and leases three four-star properties in Mauritius- Victoria, Canonnier, and Mauricia Beachcomber resorts - to NMH for operation under the Beachcomber brand. Through Kingfisher Ltd, BHI also owns Sainte Anne Resort in Seychelles, currently leased to Club Med. Meanwhile, Semaris, an independent entity listed on the Stock Exchange of Mauritius, develops luxury residential projects using land previously held by NMH, including properties in Mauritius, Seychelles, and Morocco.
Strategic Impact and Market Positioning
This Zanzibar acquisition represents Beachcomber's first entry into Tanzania. The move targets affluent international travelers and regional visitors seeking premium Indian Ocean experiences. Zanzibar's emergence as a luxury destination mirrors Mauritius's trajectory, offering pristine beaches, UNESCO heritage sites, and vibrant culture.
The investment serves multiple strategic purposes. It diversifies Beachcomber's geographic footprint beyond Mauritius and Seychelles. It positions the brand to capture growing East African tourism demand. Most importantly, it creates synergies with Tanzania's safari circuits, leveraging NMH's existing tour operations through Beachcomber Tours in South Africa and Mautourco in Mauritius to offer combined beach-and-bush experiences that premium travelers increasingly seek.
When finalized, Beachcomber will bring its decades of Indian Ocean hospitality expertise to Zanzibar. The acquisition strengthens the island's luxury accommodation portfolio while establishing Beachcomber as a key player in East Africa's upscale tourism market. This calculated expansion reflects the group's confidence in Zanzibar's potential as the region's next premier destination.
